LOS ANGELES, CA, February 13, 2017The Hollywood Reporter – the definitive interpretive voice of the mainstream entertainment industry – announced today the returning season of Mom vs Matchmaker, set to premiere on March 14 only on Myx TV, a network targeting Asian American viewers.

Mom vs Matchmaker is a reality series focused on finding the perfect match for millennials.  Matchmaking professional Carmelia Ray challenges the mothers of the contestants in finding a suitable date for their kid. Each will set up a date in the hopes that their pick will be chosen. The singles find out at the end of the episode who prepared which date.

In the article written by Kara Haar, it was revealed that “On the season two premiere, music producer Justin is ready for love. He prefers a creative, big-eyed girl with a ‘booty.’ His mother claims he wants someone who resembles her. In the episode, his mother tries to find a nice girl who loves cooking, while Ray also looks for his perfect match.”

Mom vs. Matchmaker is produced by Daniel Oron and Natasha Ryan for Go Button Media and Myx TV General Manager Miguel Santos for said network.

To celebrate the upcoming premiere of Mom vs. Matchmaker season two, Myx TV is hosting a Valentine’s Day marathon. Beginning on Tuesday, Myx TV will air episodes of several series focused on love. The schedule includes Season 1 of Mom vs. Matchmaker, six episodes of Bagged and six Asian romance movies including Rise Up, First Kiss, Love, Forever Love, 100 Days and My Valentine.

Mom vs. Matchmaker premieres Tuesday, March 14, at 8 p.m. on Myx TV. The episodes can be watched the following day on myxtv.com.

DALY CITY, CA, January 25, 2017 – Before the Filipino indie blockbuster hit, “That Thing Called Tadhana” (That Thing Called Fate), became the highest grossing Filipino independent film of all time in 2015, there was this film described by Richard Kuipers of Variety as “a lively laffer about cynical filmmakers planning a ‘poverty porn’ drama solely for the purpose of scoring free travel to international film festivals”. This claimed the highest grossing Filipino indie film crown in 2011.  In fact, it became the official entry of the Philippines in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards.

The movie, “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank” (The Woman in the Septic Tank), starred JM De Guzman, Kean Cipriano and Cai Cortez as three film school graduates who, thirsty for fame, are dead-set on making the ultimate Filipino misery movie for the sole purpose of winning international recognition and awards and all the perks that go with these.  Their muse is actress Eugene Domingo (who plays an exaggerated version of herself).  The satire, directed by Marlon Rivera from the screenplay of Chris Martinez, was a critical and commercial success.

The good news is that this hilarious filmmaking team is back for the sequel called, “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 2: #ForeverisNotEnough”.  After lampooning the independent filmmakers in the first film, the funny sequel satirizes the mainstream film industry.  The film will be shown in U.S. theaters starting this Friday, January 27.

This time, Eugene Domingo (who again plays an over-the-top version of herself), is ready for a comeback after a long sabbatical from moviemaking.  Rainier (Kean Cipriano), who was Eugene’s ambitious director in the first film, is now an award-winning director.  He and his formerly quiet-assistant-turned-excessively-glib producer Jocelyn (Cai Cortez) propose to Eugene a love story – a heartbreaking anatomy of a crumbling marriage – inspired by Rainier’s own marital situation.  Eugene is thrilled and has her eyes set on Jericho Rosales (a fictionalized version of the actor played by Jericho Rosales himself) as her leading man in the movie.

But the misadventures begin to trickle in when fickle-minded Eugene starts making suggestions and recommendations that morph Rainier’s script into absurdity, countering his artistic and personal intentions for the movie.

As Rappler.com movie critic Oggs Cruz said, “Domingo… wholeheartedly commits to Chris Martinez’s cleverly designed script that spells out his stark observations on how commercial romantic movies are so formulaic that even the performances in those films can be categorized.”

Cruz added: “If there is one thing that most viewers will remember from Marlon Rivera’s Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2: #ForeverIsNotEnough, it is that scene where Eugene Domingo, covered only by a towel, tells her 3-person audience the 3 ways to act heartbroken.”

DALY CITY, CA, Jan. 25, 2017 – Following the very enthusiastic reception from San Francisco Bay Area university students and the officers of the Philippine Consulate General of San Francisco which hosted the first talk on November 12, 2016, the team behind tfc_U Talks revealed huge plans to reach out to Filipino American university students across the U.S. in 2017.

Starting February 4, Saturday, tfc_U Talks — a series of informative and interactive discourses and discussions organized by ABS-CBN International’s TFC that is designed to connect, inspire and empower Filipino American college students –- is kicking off its year-long, monthly series with a talk called, “Breaking the Mold” that will be held at the Beach Auditorium of Cal State University, Long Beach.  Admission to the event is free.

“We started the year with the topic of ‘Breaking the Mold’ because that’s exactly what we want to achieve with our university talk series,” said Troy Espera, tfc_U Talks team lead and executive producer of BA, a daily Filipino American TV news show shown on TFC. “We live in an age and culture where personal ethnic identity, racism, media-imposed pressure and social stereotypes all conspire to turn us into something that we are not.”

Connect.Inspire.EmpowerFor February 4, the tfc_U Talks team selected three Filipino American speakers who dared to do the unexpected in their respective fields, and thus stood out and made an impact.

AJ Rafael – A native of Moreno Valley, California, AJ is a singer-musician-songwriter-recording artist who is among the millions who have tried their luck in “American Idol”.  But while he had a good audition in 2005, he never progressed to the later stages in the competition.  A year later, he started posting his videos on YouTube.  To date, his videos have been viewed over 100 million times. He now has over 650,000 subscribers on the platform, over 400,000 followers on Facebook, over 183,000 followers on Twitter, over 147,000 followers on Instagram and is also blowing up Snapchat with his clips, making him a social media powerhouse.  He has also released original songs, EPs and one full album that was funded on Kickstarter. AJ has toured internationally.

Roslynn Cobarrubias – With about two decades of experience in the music industry and social media arena, Roslynn’s resume is highly impressive. She is the co-Founder & CMO of mydiveo.com, a global talent discovery & video resume platform that cultivates discovery and collaboration by providing artists and creatives with a mobile portfolio to showcase their talent. Last year, engage:BDR, a leading cross-device advertising solution company, announced its acquisition of mydiveo for US $7.4 million. Roslynn was also Senior Director of Artist Relations at Myspace Inc., a company she helped market since its early stages and helped develop for close to 10 years. Billboard Magazine named her one of the “Top 30 Music Industry Professionals Under 30″ alongside professionals Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber’s manager) and Daniel Ek (Founder of Spotify). Roslynn was also featured in The Source Magazine “Power 30″ alongside notables Diddy & Russell Simmons with the Myspace co-founders. Chef Charleen Caabay – Setting up a makeshift kitchen wherever she could, Chef Charleen started her colorful culinary adventures by opening her first pop-up restaurant in October 2012, building a solid following of foodies throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Shortly after, her Kainbigan Filipino Comfort Food, opened its doors in August 2013 in Oakland, California. She has been instrumental in introducing Filipino cuisine to companies such as Google, Zoosk, OkCupid and Eventbrite, to name a few. Chef Charleen also catered to such celebrities as Goapele, rapper Eve and famed poet Ursula Rucker.  In December 2016, Chef Charleen became the first Filipino American female chef to win in Food Network’s “Chopped” cooking show. She plans to travel to the Philippines with family in early 2017 to explore and get inspiration for her upcoming culinary programs and special event projects featuring Filipino cuisine. This will be launched this Spring and Summer upon her return to the San Francisco Bay Area.

DALY CITY, CA,  January 10, 2017 – The year 2016 was a banner year for Filipino filmmakers.  Among those who made a big splash in the international scene last year was 2009 Cannes Best Director Awardee Brillante Mendoza whose gritty slice-of-life film, “Ma’ Rosa”, won the 2016 Cannes Best Actress Award for lead actress Jaclyn Jose. Meanwhile, Lav Diaz scored huge triumphs with the coveted Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival for his epic eight-hour obra, “Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis” (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery). Diaz also scored with “Ang Babaeng Humayo” (The Woman Who Left) starring the esteemed Charo Santos-Concio in a vengeful tale of a woman wrongly imprisoned.  It won the Golden Lion Prize for Best Picture at the 2016 Venice Film Festival.

Others who made entertainment headlines included Ralston G. Jover’sHamog” (Haze), a Cinema One Originals youth noir which won the Russian Film Critics’ Jury for Best Film Award at the Main Competition of the 38th Moscow International Film Festival.  “Toto”, a dark comedy drama about a nurse longing to chase the American dream, won for director John Paul Su the Best Foreign Film at the 19th LA Comedy Festival in Los Angeles and Best Actor for film lead Sid Lucero.  It also won the Audience Choice Award for Best Film at the 39th Asian American International Film Festival in New York City.  Today, Su is now among NBCUniversal’s Emerging Director’s Program finalists.

The list is long, but the point is made: the works of Filipino filmmakers are shining around the world.  This is the context in which CINEMATOGRAFO Originals Contest was born.  This new competition, which launches today, aims to foster and nurture new filmmaking talent from the Filipino diaspora.  It is a platform to tell new stories and hear new voices of this generation.

CINEMATOGRAFO Originals Contest is a new annual competition that provides seed grants for full-length features, either documentary or narrative.  It is open to all U.S. citizens and/or U.S. permanent residents of Filipino descent, 18 years or older. 

And for budding filmmakers struggling to get funding for their projects, CINEMATOGRAFO awards more than $100,000 worth of production, marketing and distribution funds.  This is a path to have stories realized on the big screen.

The contest criteria are 40% Story and Premise, 20% Presentation, 20% Plot and Pacing and 10% Theme.

CINEMATOGRAFO Originals Contest winners will actually highlight the CINEMATOGRAFO International Film Festival to be held this October in San Francisco.  What we want to do is to provide a platform for a new generation of U.S.-based Filipino or Filipino American filmmakers to bring their films to the world stage.  CINEMATOGRAFO International Film Festival will be the premier event for that purpose,” said Film Festival Director John-D Lazatin, also the Global Head of Theatricals of ABS-CBN International.
